MACHINERY

“Machinery” is a very delicate project by the artist, in which he exceptionally respectfully recreates some of the sad pages of Cuba's history. All the works are made with American toys that belonged to children who were part of the Peter Pan Project, or with Russian toys that belonged to children in Cuba during the fall of the Berlin Wall; toys that, in some way, were abandoned by the children’s dreams or by their parents’ frustration. Each piece seeks to recreate those dreams.

The Peter Pan Operation, organized by the U.S. Department of State, the CIA, and the Catholic Church, took place in Cuba in 1962. It was a massive exodus of 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children to the United States, fleeing Communism. Many of them, upon reaching the promised land, found safe refuge or had the chance to reunite with their parents, but many did not, and they were left to their fate on unfamiliar ground, exposed to all kinds of abuse and mistreatment.

Sadly, the children were registered and sent to the United States not by their names, but as “Emigrant” and the corresponding number. Esterio Les added elements such as wings or oars to increase the visual sense of movement, as if a child had imagined that transformation, turning the toy into an illusion. As a tribute, Segura titled his little cars the same way the children were named, who were sent to the U.S. seeking to fulfill the American Dream, but left behind their own dreams.

MAQUINARIAS

“Maquinarias” constituye un proyecto muy delicado del maestro, en el que recrea de forma excepcionalmente respetuosa algunas de las tristes páginas de la historia de Cuba. Todas las obras están hechas con juguetes estadounidenses que pertenecieron a niños que formaron parte del Proyecto Peter Pan, o con juguetes rusos que pertenecieron a niños en Cuba durante la caída del Muro de Berlín; juguetes que, de alguna manera, fueron abandonados por los sueños de los niños o por la frustración de sus padres. Cada obra busca recrear esos sueños.

La Operación Peter Pan, organizada por el Departamento de Estado de USA, la CIA y la iglesia católica, tuvo lugar en Cuba en 1962. Constituyó un éxodo masivo de 14000 niños cubanos no acompañados hacia Estados Unidos, huyendo del Comunismo. Muchos de ellos al llegar a la tierra prometida, hallaron refugio seguro o tuvieron la oportunidad de reencontrarse con sus padres; pero muchísimos no, y quedaron a su suerte en suelo desconocido, expuestos a cualquier tipo de abusos y maltratos.

Tristemente, los niños eran registrados y enviados hacia Estados Unidos no por sus nombres, sino como "Emigrante" y el número correspondiente. Esterio Les añadió elementos como alas o remos aumentando la sensación visual de movimiento como si un niño hubiese imaginado esa transformación, convirtiéndo el juguete en la ilusión. A modo de homenaje, Segura tituló sus carritos como mismo eran nombrados los niños, quienes fueron enviados hacia USA buscando cumplir el sueño americano, pero, dejaron atrás sus propios sueños.
