HOMEMADE SUBMARINES

HOMEMADE SUBMARINES is a Project that stems from an interest already presented in Space Occupied by a Dream (2000) and You can´t eat everything that flies (2003): the (in)communication, the travel (virtual or real), the frustration of personal desires.

One more time, the hybrid allowed him to integrate in the same object a classic automobile being a Buick, a Rolls-Royce or a Pontiac– and some Russian and American models of submarines from the World War II. At this point, Homemade submarines exaggerates the utopian component, the willingness to make real a wish. In the same way, it manifests Cuban inventive aptitude and the comeback of handmade manufacturing as a solution to resource constraints and the need to make the impossible possible.

Without any doubt, the revision of the migratory issue is the origin of this project, but what is really important is to emphasize how making real a dream is the solution. To take the American classic car from the fifties as the expression of an ideal, still fixed in the minds of some Cubans, also implies getting into the psychological process accompanying the idea of traveling. It is all about analyzing, from the fetish of a car, in this case, a political, geographic, and historic condition: the Cuban reality.

SUBMARINOS HECHOS EN CASA

Submarinos hechos en casa es parte de un interés que había sido esbozado de alguna manera en los proyectos Espacio ocupado por un sueño (2000) y No todo lo que vuela se come (2003): los conceptos asociados a la (in)comunicación, el viaje (virtual o real), la frustración de proyectos y anhelos personales.

Una vez más, lo híbrido permite integrar en un mismo objeto un coche clásico; sea Buick, Rolls-Royce o Pontiac, y modelos de submarinos rusos y americanos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En este punto, Submarinos hechos en casa exacerba el componente utópico: la añoranza de hacer realidad un deseo. De la misma manera en que se pretende poner de manifiesto la capacidad inventiva del cubano, y la vuelta a lo artesanal como solución a la falta de recursos y a la necesidad de hacer posible lo imposible.

Indiscutiblemente, la revisión del tópico migratorio es un punto de partida, pero lo que se pretende puntualizar es más bien el referente físico, la concreción de un sueño. Tomar el carro americano de los años cincuenta como expresión de un ideal fijo aún en la mente de muchos, supone también adentrarse en el proceso psicológico que acompaña la idea del viaje. Se trata de analizar desde el fetiche "el carro" una coyuntura política, geográfica e histórica específica: la cubana.
